Sustainability and nuclear waste
To support our vision to make nuclear waste permanently safe, sooner, we will optimise waste to support the UK nuclear industry by:

Five sustainability goals
Our sustainability strategy sets out five sustainability goals, aligned to our vision, mission and values, to integrate sustainability into what we do and how we do it. These goals strengthen waste management and sustainability practices throughout the nuclear lifecycle. They are:
Closing the loop on waste
We will apply the waste hierarchy to optimise waste, including safe, permanent waste disposal options. This creates a more efficient, circular approach to sustainable waste management across the UK’s nuclear sector and contributes directly to long-term nuclear sustainability.

Our approach to environmental enhancement will protect nature and respond to the climate crisis.

We will empower our people to make an impact as sustainability leaders.

Our five sustainability goals are focused on integrating sustainability into key phases of the waste lifecycle:
Planning and preparation
Decision-making, inventory management and characterisation are the foundation of sustainable waste management throughout the waste lifecycle
Treatment and packaging
This allows us to reduce overall waste volumes, maximise efficiency of packaging and optimise the use of waste management routes, supporting wider waste management and sustainability.
Disposal
Enabling safe, secure, permanent disposal of waste in the right facility at the right time to deliver best value to the taxpayer.
