Theddlethorpe

Theddlethorpe is one of three communities across England currently engaged in learning what hosting a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF) could mean for them.

Introduction

The Search Area covers the wards of Withern and Theddlethorpe and Mablethorpe.

The Theddlethorpe GDF Community Partnership was formed in June 2022.

In the community

In December 2023, a Community Investment Panel (CIP) was set up to consider applications and decide on the awarding of grants. During its first year, it awarded £1million to eight local projects. These included an adventure playground and community garden, an employability programme, and a befriending service.

The Community Partnership also commissioned a holidaymaker survey in 2023. This was to engage with tourists to find out if a GDF would affect their decision to visit the area. This is the start of work aimed at understanding what people know and think about a GDF and the discussions on doorsteps with local people and with holidaymakers will continue.

Informed by the Community Partnership’s engagement, the Community Partnership has established a Programme of Activities which includes work with the community on a vision for the area.

Areas of Focus in Theddlethorpe

In the search for a suitable site for a GDF, three key elements are needed with the right sub-surface geological environment deep underground, a suitable surface location, and the ability to connect the two areas with accessways.

A Surface Area of Focus has been identified in East Lincolnshire, within the Theddlethorpe Search Area. This area is land to the north of the A157, south-west of Gayton wind farm, between the villages of Gayton le Marsh and Great Carlton.

The sub-surface Area of Focus off the coast is under the seabed in the inshore area which extends 22km from the coast.

Property value protection

The NWS Property Value Protection (PVP) scheme is a support scheme and is only available to those who are able to demonstrate a compelling need to sell their property, yet have been unable to do so, other than at a substantially reduced price, due to the search for a suitable site to host a GDF in their community.
